Who is Eligible?

• Residents living below Houston Street who spent time below Canal Street
• Students at schools below Canal Street in Lower Manhattan
• People trapped in the dust clouds after the collapse of the towers

Downtown office workers, retail and service workers, firefighters, police officers, emergency workers, cleanup workers, residents, students,  and thousands of other people who were present on 9/11 and in the following months were exposed to the toxic dust, smoke and fumes that emanated from the collapse of the World Trade Center towers and the burning pile of debris. Many of these people are eligible for compensation from the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund.

To be eligible for compensation, an individual must show:

1. He or she was present in the World Trade Center Exposure Zone – the area below Canal Street in Lower Manhattan (see map here) – or involved in the rescue and recovery effort – between September 11, 2001 and May 30, 2002;
2. He or she spent sufficient hours in the Exposure Zone; and
3. He or she has an eligible cancer or respiratory condition.

Responders, Cleanup and Recovery Workers

Thousands of Responders such as FDNY firefighters, NYPD police officers, NYC and Transit Authority bus drivers, Verizon technicians, National Guardsmen and other workers participated in and supported the rescue and cleanup efforts after the 9/11 attacks.
