The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund pays compensation to victims diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer caused by exposure to 9/11 dust, debris and fumes. The 9/11 Compensation Fund can award a 9/11 cancer victim up to $250,000 for pain, suffering and loss of life enjoyment. If victims are disabled by their colon cancer, they may be entitled to additional compensation for lost wages. Exposure to 9/11 Dust, Debris, Smoke and Fumes
The collapse of the World Trade Center towers engulfed Lower Manhattan in enormous clouds of dust, smoke, and fumes. Dust remained in the air and on the ground for months. So too, the huge pile of rubble burning on Ground Zero poured smoke and toxic fumes into the air. These conditions put thousands of responders, downtown office workers, students and residents at risk for 9/11-related colon and rectal cancers. Now, many individuals exposed to dust and debris from the 9/11 terrorist attack are being diagnosed with colon and rectal cancers.
Asbestos Found in 9/11 Dust Related to Colon and Rectal Cancers
Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Scientific/Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) analyzed the dust and debris created by the collapse of the WTC Towers. The Committee found heavy concentrations of asbestos in the WTC dust. Asbestos is a known cause of cancer and can trigger the onset of colon and rectal cancer. Furthermore, a FDNY study found there was a significantly higher incidence rate of colorectal cancer among firefighters who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks than was expected (21 observed versus 14 expected). Due to these findings, the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund and the World Trade Center Health Program classify colorectal cancer as eligible for compensation and medical treatment.
As of December 31, 2021, 463 World Trade Center responders and 395 survivors (i.e. downtown office workers, students, residents, and visitors) are receiving treatment for colorectal cancer from the World Trade Center Health Program. For rectal cancer, 195 responders and 229 survivors are receiving treatment from the World Trade Center Health Program.
