The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (“VCF”) pays compensation to individuals diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease) who were exposed to dust from the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC). The VCF can award a 9/11 cancer victim up to $250,000 for pain, suffering and loss of life enjoyment. If the lymphoma disables a victim, he or she may be entitled to additional compensation for lost wages. Additionally, the World Trade Center Health Program assists with out of pocket costs associated with treatment of certain certified conditions.
WTC Dust and Smoke Linked with Hodgkin Lymphoma
The cloud of dust caused by the collapse of the WTC Twin Towers on 9/11 engulfed a large portion of Lower Manhattan with polluted, toxic air. In the months following the attacks, smoke from the burning debris at Ground Zero contaminated the air below Canal Street. Tens of thousands of people were exposed to cancer-causing dust, debris, and fumes.
Samples of dust from the World Trade Center site were tested by NIOSH and found to contain high concentrations of chemicals and other human carcinogens that place people at high risk for cancers. Among the chemicals identified in the residual dust and fumes were 1,3-butadiene, and formaldehyde. According to the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, there is substantial evidence linking Hodgkin lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease) with exposure to 1,3-butadiene and formaldehyde.
Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma attack the body’s immune system, starting in white blood cells called lymphocytes. These cancers are often categorized as lymphomas.
Lymphoma cancers represent the fourth most common cancer treated by the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP). As of September 30, 2017, several hundred 9/11 responders, downtown workers, residents and others were certified to receive treatment for lymphoma from the WTCHP, and that number is growing.
